5 Things You Should Look for in a LASIK Surgeon

LASIK surgeonsmale hands typing on laptopNow that you have decided — or are at least considering LASIK surgery, you are probably feeling a mixture of emotions. Excitement, fear, and overwhelm are all completely normal feelings that come along with any surgery.

There are many different things to consider about LASIK surgery but one of the most important decisions you will make is who your surgeon will be. It is a big choice but fortunately, you don’t have to make it alone.

Here are five things you should look for when you are choosing a LASIK surgeon:

  • Personality

Experience and certifications are important but ultimately, you need to find a surgeon you like. Nobody wants to be treated like they are on an assembly line with their doctor. You should look for someone who takes the time to listen to your concerns and answer any questions you may have.

  • Referrals

This comes with a major caveat: there are some referrals you should be wary of. That stranger on Yelp may have a point but they may also just be a former patient nursing a grudge.

Look for friends and family members who have previously had LASIK and ask for their referrals. A great referral from a trusted source will go a long way toward giving you peace of mind.

  • Experience

Book knowledge will only get you so far when it comes to performing surgeries and at the end of the day, nothing can replace actual experience. Look for someone who has a strong track record of performing LASIK surgery. Obviously, there is no cut-and-dry answer to how much experience is necessary but go with your gut on whether you believe that person is qualified or not.

  • Technology

You should look for a surgeon who offers the latest LASIK technology. Having the most up-to-date technology will provide you better results with fewer risks of complications.

  • Certifications

You should only choose a surgeon who is board-certified and licensed to perform LASIK in your state. This should be the bare minimum requirement for choosing any surgeon.
