Serving the Greater Los Angeles Area
Coming from: Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Orange County, Ventura County
Custom LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a newer form of LASIK vision correction surgery in which unique optical distortion information on each individual eye is obtained and then used for treatment. Similar to fingerprints, patients have their own unique eye qualities, so they can get treatment which is customized to their specific vision correction needs.
Custom LASIK accomplishes this through computerized equipment that sends a light beam into each eye. This light beam lands on the retina and is then reflected back into a sensor created to detect the irregularities that the light beam locates. Then the computer creates a three-dimensional model or map of the unique shape of each eye and guides the laser when the LASIK procedure is performed.
A custom LASIK evaluation of the irregularities in your eyes can establish whether custom LASIK, would offer better vision correction results. No other technology can accomplish this level of analysis and treatment. This makes custom LASIK an invaluable tool for ophthalmologists and patients alike.
Should You Choose Custom LASIK over Regular LASIK?
Regular LASIK can treat the basic eye problems of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (irregularly shaped eye which causes blurred or double vision). Custom LASIK, however, treats those same problems and additional ones known as higher order aberrations. These higher order aberrations can cause such things as glare, halos, or night vision problems. Good candidates for custom LASIK may be able to reduce or eliminate such vision irritants. For the properly selected patient, the results of custom LASIK are more predictable as well as more precise than regular LASIK. With custom LASIK, over 90% of patients achieve 20/20 vision after a single, 10 minute, LASIK treatment.
Some people compare the idea of custom LASIK with regular LASIK to buying an off-the-rack suit versus getting a suit custom tailored just for you. The quality of custom LASIK is unparalleled when compared to regular LASIK, for the proper candidate. For these patients, Custom LASIK is predicted to become the basic standard of care in the future.
Of course, you should always discuss the advantages of custom LASIK vision correction surgery with your surgeon to make sure that this is the right procedure for you. If you have small pupils you may not be a candidate because the wavefront measurements require a minimum pupil size for accuracy. For technical reasons, in some people the traditional measurements are more accurate than the wavefront measurements. Your surgeon should recommend the method of measurement and treatment that gives you the best chance of excellent vision.
If you are looking for freedom from your glasses and contact lenses but may not be a candidate for regular LASIK laser vision correction treatment or simply want more from your LASIK treatment, you may be a candidate for custom LASIK.
