For the correction of the most extreme levels of nearsightedness and farsightedness, the procedure of choice is the implantation of a contact lens-like material inside the eye. Unlike cataract surgery or Clear Lens Exchange surgery, the natural lens is not removed; rather, the implant sits in front of the natural lens. In effect, the contact lens implant becomes an internal contact lens.

Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Implantable Contact Lenses and ICL Photo This outpatient procedure (known as “phakic IOL implantation”) can be performed under topical (eye drop) anesthesia and can be used to correct up to 20 diopters of nearsightedness or 12 diopters of farsightedness. Patients with less severe refractive errors may be considered for phakic IOL surgery if the cornea is too thin for laser vision correction (ie: LASIK or PRK). For patients with refractive errors outside of this range (ie: too much nearsightedness or concomitant high astigmatism), the Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL) procedure may be combined with LASIK in a procedure called Bioptics which also offers excellent visual results. While we have been working with and implanting phakic IOLs in a research capacity since 1996, the FDA’s initial phakic IOL approval did not come until 2004.

$Los Angeles and Beverly Hills Refractive Surgeons - ICL Photo$ Bioptics is a combination procedure involving a Lens Implant (ie: with cataract surgery, Clear Lens Exchange, or Implantable Contact Lens surgery) followed by Laser Vision Correction (ie: LASIK or PRK). It is recommended for the most extreme levels of myopia and hyperopia (with or without astigmatism) when neither technique alone will entirely correct the refractive error. This combined technique can be used to correct over 30.00 diopters of myopia—twice the maximum amount that can be safely corrected with LASIK.

Bioptics involves reducing the majority of the refractive error with a Lens Implant followed by employing Lasik or surface ablation once the refractive error has stabilized to correct the additional nearsightedness and/or astigmatism. Bioptics may also be utilized for patients with less extreme refractive errors as a way of fine-tuning their vision following Lens Implant surgery.
