Myth: I Have Astigmatism and Have Been Told I Can't Have LASIK
Only a small number of patient's with astigmatism are not good candidates for LASIK. LASIK is not as precise for people who have extremely high astigmatism, but this is so rare that it only represents less than 1% of people with astigmatism.
Patients with significant astigmatism are often the best candidates for LASIK because their alternatives: glasses and contact lenses, may not offer great vision. For example, astigmatism contact lenses can rotate on the eye, leading to fluctuating or blurred vision. Similarly, one's vision can become quite distorted when looking slightly off-center (ie: gazing left, right, up, or down) through an astigmatism correcting spectacle. In contrast, when a patient with astigmatism undergoes LASIK (or PRK), because the astigmatism is corrected directly on the cornea, the vision remains stable no matter which direction the patient gazes.

Eye Protection Tools
Which type of eye protection you use will depend on the types of hazards which you may deal with. Remember to always use eye protection such as safety glasses or goggles when you are tackling home-improvement projects. Lots of people forget to do this. Wearing eye protection is a much cheaper and easier solution the fixing any damage you might inflict. If you work somewhere where workers need eye protection but the workplace doesn't require you to wear it, speak up. You may save your vision or your coworker's!

Tips and Tricks of Eye Safety
- Make Safety Glasses a Habit - Use safety glasses with side shields or goggles when doing something that might affect your eyes, such as home improvement projects. Safety glasses are one of the simplest and most overlooked methods of protecting your eyes. So get into the habit of wearing safety glasses, and your eyes will thank you.
- Walk with scissors or other sharp objects; don't run.
- Avoid being around bows and arrows, firecrackers or other fireworks, guns, paint guns, sling-shots, or anything else that has or is a projectile.
- Use good lighting so your eyes don't get tired from working too hard to read, write, or surf the Internet.
- Know or learn first aid, so that if there is an eye injury you can help treat it immediately.
- Get your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist yearly, or more often if recommended.
- Wear proper eye protection if necessary for sports (example: catcher's mask in baseball or softball)
- Block both ultraviolet-A and ultraviolet-B radiation by wearing sunglasses for protection from the sun.
- Never look directly at the sun.
- Do not observe any eclipse with your naked eye. Use the appropriate filtration or you may risk permanent eye damage or even blindness.
- Point chemicals and other sprays away from your face before you open or spray them.

Causes of Eye Injuries
The main causes of eye injuries are chemicals getting in them and burning them; flying objects, such as bits of glass, metal, or wood harming your eye; particles such as dust getting in your eye; radiation entering your eye from your workplace; or tools either entering your eye or causing what they are working on to enter your eye. In order to prevent eye injuries make sure you wear safety glasses whenever necessary.

"My vision is actually
better than 20 20"
"It was like a miracle - when I left Dr. Davidorf's office the day of my surgery, I could see right away. When I woke up the next morning I could see the alarm clock. While travelling with my band in Tokyo I spotted a McDonald's sign from a mile away. Our tour manager was very impressed. My vision is actually better than 20 20."
