Also known as Intra-LASIK, all-laser LASIK, blade-free LASIK, or bladeless LASIK, IntraLase is a LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) laser vision correction technology which uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create the corneal flap—instead of using a metal blade—during the first step of LASIK.
Unlike mechanical instruments, IntraLase technology is uniquely able to program the dimensions of your flap based on what’s best for your eye. Then the IntraLase laser creates your flap from below the surface of the cornea—without ever using a blade to cut it. Because of the superior accuracy of the IntraLase method, certain patients who were ineligible for LASIK may now be able to have treatment, especially patients with very thin or asymmetric corneas.
The major difference between IntraLasik and LASIK is that with IntraLasik the IntraLase laser creates the corneal flap for the laser eye surgery instead of a microkeratome blade. A microkeratome is a surgical device that is affixed to the eye by use of a vacuum ring in conventional LASIK surgery. When secured, a very sharp, precise blade cuts a layer of the cornea at a predetermined depth.
IntraLase technology uses a computer to control the special laser used only for creating the corneal flap for the LASIK surgery procedure. Tiny, rapid pulses of laser light position microscopic bubbles at a precise depth and diameter determined by the surgeon. The laser light passes harmlessly through your cornea, creating the flap in about 20 seconds. It’s quiet and it’s comfortable. With the latest advances, IntraLase technology brings additional accuracy, as well as superior safety and efficacy to the creation of the corneal flap.
Because a laser is used instead of a blade to create the corneal flap, the IntraLase LASIK method is called all-laser, blade-free, or bladeless LASIK.
A consultation with your ophthalmologist is needed to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK with the IntraLase method.
