Telescopic Intraocular Lens for Macular Degeneration

There are a number of different types of intraocular lenses available for patients undergoing cataract surgery. New lens designs (i.e., ReSTOR, ReZoom, Crystalens) can enable patients to see for the vast majority of their activities, without the need for glasses or contact lenses. However, the options for people suffering from Macular Degeneration have been more limited.

A novel lens design that uses two miniature mirrors to enhance the telescopic image created by the lens has been developed in Israel (Lipshitz Macular Implant). The goal of the telescopic lens implant is to greatly magnify images for patients with significant central retinal disease (i.e., macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, among others) and make it possible to regain their ability to read. The telescopic lens may offer benefits to conventional low vision aids by not severely compromising peripheral vision.
