Do you have cataracts and need to have cataract surgery? One important decision that comes with this is what intraocular lens you’ll choose.

Davidorf Eye Group is excited to offer our patients the revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens. Our cataract surgeons always bring patients the latest and most state-of-the-art technology to ensure personalized, top-notch care.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens that allows patients to customize their vision. Following cataract surgery and recovery, patients can preview what their vision outcomes will look like, and then they will choose their best vision from this.

After several light treatments performed at Davidorf Eye Group using the Light Delivery Device (LDD), you’ll have the Light Adjustable Lens eventually locked into place with one final treatment. Using ultraviolet light, your ophthalmologist can fine-tune the Light Adjustable Lens to the changes made during treatments to ensure patients have their desired visual outcomes.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens works because it’s made from a special material that adjusts when exposed to light after being implanted in the eye during cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens contains a small amount of a material that’s sensitive to light, allowing it to react to ultraviolet light.

The Light Delivery Device allows your ophthalmologist to make small yet precise adjustments to the shape and curve of the lens to improve your vision to your exact specifications. Patients must wear glasses that protect against UV light after cataract surgery.

These can only be removed while showering, washing their face, or applying eye drops. The glasses ensure there are no uncontrolled changes to the Light Adjustable Lens beyond the precise changes made during light treatments. Each patient needs between 3 to 5 total light treatments.

Treatments last about 90 seconds and take place about three days apart. After achieving ideal visual goals, your ophthalmologist locks in your results, leaving you with the vision you want.

What Makes the Light Adjustable Lens Different from Other IOLs?

The Light Adjustable Lens is extraordinary because it allows patients to customize their vision. No other intraocular lens can put this level of power into a patient’s hands.

Other intraocular lenses are designed to have a fixed power, meaning there have always been limitations. Vision with these IOLs can be good, but it may leave patients feeling like it’s not good enough.

Patients may also need to contend with vision that doesn’t give them what they want. But precise adjustments ensure you’ll achieve the best possible vision with the Light Adjustable Lens. Patients who choose the Light Adjustable Lens can see their vision changing and improving with each light treatment.

How Do I Know if I’m a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Although there is a lot to love about the Light Adjustable Lens, it is not suitable for everybody. You may be a good candidate for this intraocular lens if the following applies:

  • You have a cataract and need to have cataract surgery
  • You have astigmatism of at least 0.75 diopters
  • You do not have an existing macular disease
  • You’re not currently taking any medications that may increase your sensitivity to ultraviolet light
  • You do not currently take medications that could cause harm to your retina
  • You agree to wear the UV-protection glasses and follow all instructions for light delivery treatments
